About this template
Measure each window, room by room, for blinds, shades, shutters and curtains: three widths and three heights to the 1/8 in, the mount, depth and diagonals, obstructions, controls and the motor's power supply, the size kept for your order, and the curtains' face width and finished length.
Guide and sources
Give each room its own section ("Add a room") and measure every window, even when two look the same. Use a steel tape and read to the nearest 1/8 in; typing "35 1/8" works, and the keys under the cell offer the eighths. Your maker's measuring form and ordering rules always come first: the figures in the hints are what several makers publish, not a rule.
Inside mount: measure the width inside the frame at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at left, centre and right. The sheet keeps the narrowest width. For the height, choose on each row what your maker asks: the longest for most shades and horizontal blinds, the shortest for vertical blinds, sliding panels and shutters. Never take a deduction: the factory takes it for an inside mount.
Outside mount: measure the opening or the trim you cover, then type the overlap per side and the room above and below. The sheet adds them to the widest width and the longest height. The factory deducts nothing on an outside mount.
Measure the depth at the top of the frame and type the product's minimum depth from the maker's chart: the sheet counts the windows that are not deep enough. Cranks, handles and alarm sensors take depth too. Measure both diagonals: a window that is not square may look better with an outside mount.
Cords: in Canada, every corded window covering sold must keep a reachable cord to 22 cm and a loop to 44 cm and carry a warning (SOR/2019-97). Note whether children live in or visit the home, and the control chosen for each window; cordless, wand and motorized controls leave no cord within reach. For a motor, note the power supply it will use.
Curtains: measure the glass, add the stackback to get the face width, then measure the length from the point your hardware sets (top of the rod, bottom of the ring) to where the curtain ends, and type the adjustment for the floor clearance, a break or a puddle (negative for a clearance). Returns and overlaps are added by the workroom.
