Window film calculator: film area, panes and rolls

One row per pane size: its width, height and how many identical panes. The calculation gives the film area, the large panes to check before installing and, from your roll size, an estimate of the rolls. In metric or imperial.

A quick estimate, without the cutting plan. The template handles the whole job: panes by facade and floor, film by product, frames and edges, review notes and totals.

Film and glass: when to check before installing (reference)

Solar film heats the glass. The trade's guides ask for a film-to-glass review in these cases, as read:

What the sources say
Large panesOver 40 sq ft (3.7 m²) for a sealed double pane and 100 sq ft (9.3 m²) for a single annealed pane, by default
Thick or tinted glass, rigid frames, exterior shadingThe film maker's glass checklist is required
Low-e glassNever apply film over a low-e coating on face 4
Tempered or annealedNo tempered mark: presume annealed glass

Rolls and cutting (reference)

The trade's figures, cited as a guide: your roll and your cut stay yours.

What the sources say
Rolls36 to 72 in (91 to 183 cm) wide by 100 ft (30.5 m)
CuttingEach piece cut about 1 in larger than the glass in both directions, then trimmed in place
EdgeAn edge gap of about 1/32 to 1/16 in, up to 1/8 in for thick safety film
SplicesAllowed when the glass is wider than the roll

How it is calculated

Pane area = width x height; film area = area x identical panes, added up over every row. A pane over 40 sq ft (3.7 m²) is counted to check: the film maker's film-to-glass review comes before installing. Rolls = film area x (1 + waste) / (roll width x roll length), rounded up to the roll: an estimate, the real cut depends on how the pieces are laid out. No roll width or waste comes filled in: they are yours.
