About this template
Measure each zone of a yard for a new lawn, sod, seed or overseeding: the area, the waste, the sod to order with its rolls and pallets, the seed in pounds, the topsoil in cubic yards and the starter fertilizer, plus the soil test, the grade near the house and the utility locate.
Guide and sources
One row per zone of the yard (front, back, side strips): its length and width in feet, plus the odd shapes or less the beds, walks and patio, then the method: sod, seed or overseeding. The figures in the hints are what growers, extension services and a Quebec public spec publish; your grower's sheet and the bag come first.
Sod: the sheet adds the waste (5 to 10% is what growers and installation guides print) and gives the sod to order, then the rolls and pallets from your grower's roll and pallet areas, rounded up once for each product. Roll sizes differ by grower and region: Zander's Ontario rolls cover 9 sq ft, 720 sq ft per skid. Lay the sod the day it arrives.
Seed: the pounds come from the zone's area and the rate on the bag, per 1,000 sq ft. Extension services print about 2 to 3 lb for Kentucky bluegrass, 3 to 4 with ryegrass and 6 to 9 for tall fescue on a new lawn, and 2 to 5 lb of perennial ryegrass to overseed. In Quebec, a public spec plans sodding and seeding from the end of the thaw to June 15 and from August 15 to October 15.
Topsoil: the cubic yards come from the settled depth you plan, 100 mm (about 4 in) after settling in that Quebec spec. Loose topsoil settles, so order a little more, and mix it into the soil below. Starter fertilizer: from the bag or, better, from a soil test.
Before digging or tilling deep, request the utility locate: Info-Excavation in Quebec, 811 in the US. Note the grade near the house: water must drain away from the foundation (NBC 9.12.4.1; IRC R401.3 asks 6 in of fall within the first 10 ft). The sheet records it, it never judges it.
