About this template
Walk a house elevation by elevation: walls and gables less the openings, trim, soffits and fascia, doors and shutters, then decks, fences and railings to stain, with the gallons per product from your coats and the spread rate on the data sheet.
Guide and sources
Walk the house elevation by elevation. In Walls and gables, add each wall with its length and height, and each gable as a triangle (the sheet halves it), then the windows and doors you will not paint. Add the fascia, soffits and trim by run length and width, and count the doors and shutters with the area of one.
For each row, name the product, the coats and the spread rate from its data sheet: the sheet gives the gallons per product, rounded up once. Makers give a range per gallon at the film they recommend, two coats on bare wood and one or two on sound paint; rough or porous surfaces take more, and none of them includes losses.
In Wood to stain, add decks, stairs, railings and fences, with 2 sides for a fence stained on both faces. Note the year built: lead paint is possible in houses built before 1978 in the US and 1990 in Canada, so plan lead-safe work practices. Check the application temperature on the data sheet before you book the job.
