Free window screen calculator: the size to make, to the 1/16 in
Get the size to make, the mesh cut and the spline of a window screen in seconds, free and without an account. One row per screen, or per group of identical screens: the width and height measured and how many. Pick the measuring method to fill the adjustments the maker prints, or type yours, then the mesh overlap and the roll width: each row gives the size to make to the 1/16 in, the mesh cut and the margin on the roll, and the totals give the mesh, the spline and the frame stock. In imperial or metric.
Window screens: what the makers say (reference)
The methods and figures read in the makers' guides. Your frame's and mesh's have the last word.
| What the source says | |
|---|---|
| Metro Screenworks | An existing screen to the nearest 1/16 in, shortest side first; behind the lip to the screen channel: height plus 1/8 in, width less 1/8 in; slider windows: less 1/8 in both ways; screw-mounted solar screens: outside edges less 1/8 in; brick clips: brick to brick less 1 in both ways |
| JELD-WEN | Three widths and three heights, keep the smallest; readings within 1/8 in |
| CRL, Rio door | The opening height measured at least three times, the shortest plus 1/4 in (6 mm); the door is 1 in wider than nominal door widths; a .185 spline for 18 x 16 fiberglass |
| Phifer | Mesh overlap 1/2 in on all sides for a window, a few inches for a door, 2 to 3 in for pool and patio panels (flat spline); a 36 x 84 in roll; thicker fabrics take one size smaller spline |
| M-D | The new screen overlaps the frame groove by at least 1 in on all sides |

How it is calculated
Size to make = measure + the method's adjustment (a negative adjustment takes off), rounded to the 1/16 in on display only. Mesh cut = size + 2 x overlap, each way. Roll margin = roll width - the cut's narrower side: below 0, the cut does not fit across the roll. Mesh to cut = cut width x height / 144 x count. Spline = 2 x (width + height) / 12 x count. Frame stock = 2 x (width - corner deduction + height - corner deduction) / 12 x count, for a new frame. The same formulas as the window screen survey template; an adjustment or overlap left empty counts 0.
Example: three bedroom screens, lip to channel
From our template page's demo: 3 identical bedroom screens measured lip to channel, 30 in wide and 24 in high. Metro Screenworks takes 1/8 in off the width and adds 1/8 in to the height (-0.125 and 0.125 in the calculator), with a 1/2 in mesh overlap (0.5) and a 36 in roll. The screen's row line gives the size to make, the mesh cut and the margin on the roll; for the 3 screens it takes 16.2 sq ft of mesh and 27 ft of spline.
