About this template

Measure each garage door opening before ordering: the opening size the door is ordered at, the headroom, backroom and side room against what your maker asks for the track, the springs and the opener, and the weatherstrip length.

Guide and sources

One row per door opening. Measure the finished opening, jamb to jamb and floor to header: makers order the door at the opening size. Then the three clearances the track needs: the headroom from the header up to the ceiling or the lowest obstruction, the backroom from the opening to the back wall along the ceiling, and the side room on each side.

What each track, spring and opener needs comes from your maker, and makers disagree: Garaga asks a backroom of the door height plus 24 in (40 in with an opener), Clopay and Amarr plus 18 in (Amarr 50 in with an opener); headroom goes from 5 in for a low headroom track to 15 in for a 15 in radius. Type your maker's figures; the hints quote several, and the sheet shows each margin, never a verdict.

The weatherstrip length covers the header and both jambs. The job form records the opener's outlet, the photo-eyes (DASMA asks the lowest beam no higher than 6 in above the floor) and any wind rating the job asks. The client's report shows the openings, their sizes and the clearances measured; the required figures and margins stay in your team's report.

Springs have a section of their own, a row per spring set to replace, with the four measurements DASMA's technical tip asks: the wire size (measure 10 or 20 coils, the sheet divides their length by the count, to compare with a wire chart), the inside diameter (the cones' casting numbers: 175, 200, 258, 334), the unwound length (or the coils counted for a distorted spring) and the wind, right or left hand. Note the color mark as seen: DASMA TDS 171 says it gives the wire size only. The sheet never sizes a spring, and DASMA leaves the replacement to a trained door systems technician.
