About this template

Measure the walls and ceilings of each room, get the sheets per product, the corners and trim, and the compound, tape and screws for the job from the makers' per-area rates, with the board type, level of finish and fire separation each room needs.

Guide and sources

Rooms: measure each room on the floor, one row per wall and one per ceiling: a wall's length and height, a ceiling's length and width. "Add a room" adds the next one with its tables blank; "Add a section like this one" adds the next floor. Deducting openings is your call: CGC and CertainTeed count them as board, USG subtracts only the large ones.

Board: pick the type and thickness the spacing and the room ask for. NBC Table 9.29.5.3 and IRC Table R702.3.5 give the thickness by support spacing; Type X is the fire-rated core; moisture-resistant board is not for wet areas or directly behind tile in a shower, and tile around tubs and showers goes over a moisture-resistant backing (NBC 9.29.10.4, IRC R702.3.7). Type the sheet size from the product's data sheet and your waste: no maker publishes a waste figure. The sheets are exact on each row and rounded up once per product.

Fire separation: in Canada a house's own garage needs no fire separation, only an air barrier against fumes (NBC 9.10.9.18); suites are separated by 45 min, or by 12.7 mm board where a secondary suite allows it (9.10.9.16; Quebec limits that option to 3 units and 2 storeys). Table 9.10.3.1.-A rates stud walls (12.7 mm Type X one layer each side: 45 min). In the US, the garage side gets 1/2 in board and a ceiling under rooms 5/8 in Type X (IRC R302.6); an enclosed space under stairs 1/2 in (R302.7).

Finishing: in the Finishing section, type the board area once (the rooms' total, shown in the totals) and the rates from the data sheets: compound about 10 gal per 1,000 sq ft (USG; CGC prints 40.5 L/100 m²), paper tape about 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft, screws from the maker's tables (about 1,000 per 1,000 sq ft at 16 in framing). Beware of "per 100 m²" columns that repeat the per-1,000 sq ft numbers. The level of finish (GA-214, 0 to 5) sets how many coats go on. Fasteners follow NBC 9.29.5.8 and 9.29.5.9, IRC Table R702.3.5 and GA-216; ASTM C840 is the application standard.

Quebec: the Construction Code, Chapter I (the NBC 2020 modified for Quebec) applies since 2025-04-17; work begun before 2027-10-17 may still follow the previous edition. Its Quebec changes leave 9.29 as is and limit 9.10.9.16. In cold weather keep the space at 10 °C or more for 48 h before and after taping (NBC 9.29.5.10).

Older homes: Health Canada lists paint, putty, drywall, caulking, sealants and spackling among older materials that may contain asbestos, and lead paint is likely before 1960 (possible until 1990; the US EPA RRP rule covers homes built before 1978). Do not sand or break a suspect surface: only a laboratory test tells.
