Attic insulation calculator: R-value to add and bags
One row per attic area: its length, width, the R of the insulation already there, and the coverage per bag and minimum thickness read from the maker's chart. Enter the target: the calculation gives the R to add and the bags. In meters, everything switches to RSI.
Makers' charts, products sold in the US (reference)
The coverage charts of loose-fill attic insulation bags, cited as a guide. The chart requires both the bag count and the thickness: read your product's row at the R you add, and enter its coverage and thickness.
| Product | R | Minimum thickness | Coverage per bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| AttiCat | 38 | 13 in | 51.4 sq ft |
| AttiCat | 49 | 16.5 in | 38.8 sq ft |
| AttiCat | 60 | 20 in | 31.1 sq ft |
| Climate Pro | 38 | 13.4 in | 57 sq ft |
| Climate Pro | 49 | 16.9 in | 43 sq ft |
| Climate Pro | 60 | 20.2 in | 34 sq ft |

Code minimums for an attic ceiling (reference)
As read. The NBC's effective RSI accounts for the framing: it is lower than the insulation's own. Programs such as Quebec's Rénoclimat and LogisVert have their own requirements: check them before the work.
| Attic ceiling | |
|---|---|
| IECC 2021 (US) | R-49 in zone 3, R-60 in zones 4 to 8 |
| NBC 2020, 9.36 (Canada) | Effective RSI 6.91 to 10.43, by heating degree-day zone (zones 4 to 8) |
| Quebec | Construction Code, Chapter I, Part 11: the NBC 2020 modified for Quebec, in force since April 17, 2025 |

The R of the insulation already there (reference)
Typical values by thickness, to estimate the existing insulation from its depth. RSI = R / 5.678; the R per inch follows.
| Insulation | R per inch, about | RSI per 25.4 mm |

| Blown fiberglass | 2.9 | 0.51 |
| Blown cellulose | 3.6 | 0.63 |

Before you blow: the cautions (reference)
What the sources say, as read.
| Caution | |
|---|---|
| Vermiculite | Assume it may contain asbestos and leave it undisturbed; any work that would disturb it goes to a trained asbestos professional |
| Chimneys | Keep insulation 75 mm (3 in) from chimneys |
| Wiring and lights | No insulation over knob-and-tube wiring or uncovered recessed lights |
| Soffits | At least 1 in of air between the insulation and the roof sheathing at the eave vents; insulation must not block the airflow |
| Air leaks | Seal the attic before insulating |

How it is calculated
Area = length x width, for each area. R to add = target R - existing R (zero when the existing is enough; left empty, the existing counts as zero). Bags = area / coverage per bag, the coverage read from the maker's chart at the row of the R you add, rounded up to the bag on the total. The chart's minimum thickness is shown back, the deepest one. RSI = R / 5.678. No coverage, thickness or existing R comes filled in: they come from the bag and the attic.
